Summary of Fall 2006 Community Conversations
The Executive Summary of the 2006 Grant Road Corridor Community Conversations summarizes the public discussion that took place in late 2006 with over 140 citizens regarding the Grant Road Improvement Planning and design process. Grant Road Improvement Plan: What Makes the Grant Road Plan Unique?
The Grant Road Improvement Plan is not just a roadway plan. The plan will incorporate themes and policies guided by the citizens of Tucson and professional planning consultants to promote multi-modal transportation, pedestrian-oriented urban design, environmental sustainability and neighborhood revitalization. The study will analyze travel and land use patterns up to a quarter mile around the centerline of Grant Road. Opportunities to enhance travel by foot, bike, and transit will be explored. The plan will explore ways to enhance the visual quality and image of the street and adjoining land uses. It will consider ways to enhance pedestrian access between local businesses and adjoining neighborhoods. It will demonstrate landscaping, artwork, environmental, and urban design themes that will define the unique "sense of place" of Grant Road and each neighborhood along the roadway.
Grant Road Improvement Plan Consultant Selection
The RFQ (request for qualifications) for planning and engineering services was advertised both nationally and locally, and followed a two-step process. Team qualifications were evaluated first, and those teams deemed most qualified were asked to submit detailed proposals. TDOT selected the team headed by Kimley-Horn and Associates. The time budget for completion is no greater than 36 months. The consulting team will research, analyze, design, present, and recommend the final alignment first. The team will then design the new roadway, including streetscape and urban design components, and complete conceptual level engineering plans. Redevelopment sites will be identified, analyzed, and graphically displayed. The urban design component for this plan will demonstrate potential building forms, heights and features, as well as their relative impact (both physically and economically) on the surrounding neighborhoods.
Grant Road Improvement Plan "Sense of Place": What's in a Name?
What's in a name? In the early 1950s, Grant Road had several names - from Country Club to Park Avenue it was named North and west of Park, residents called the road Luna. It wasn't until 1953 that these became part of what we now call Grant Road. It connects people, neighborhoods, schools, faith and business institutions to each other just like a hallway connects rooms. We are asking you to help define Grant Road's sense of place - its remembered physical and emotional landscape, or the soul of a place. We want to learn ....how you define Grant Road with stories and memories of the past, present and ideas for the future. Please send us your stories, ideas, and comments here at contact@grantroad.info.

Road Improvement Plan Task Force
The Grant Road Improvement Plan Task Force (hereafter known as "Grant Road Task Force" or "Task Force") will oversee the development of the Grant Road Improvement Plan. The Task Force will work closely with City staff and consultants to review alignment options and recommend the preferred roadway alignment, discuss and recommend planning and design themes, and infuse stakeholder input into the planning process. Task Force members will represent a wide spectrum of community and neighborhood interests, and will facilitate effective communication between project planners, City officials, community residents and business owners along Grant Road.
The Task Force will meet at key decision points throughout the Grant Road planning process. In the first twelve months the Task Force will guide the establishment of design and planning themes and the preferred roadway alignment, which will be adopted by the Mayor and Council in mid-2008. The Task Force will help to shape neighborhood and site-specific planning and design themes, features, and concepts to be included in the final design and Area Plan. Final Plan approval is expected by mid-2010.
