Grant-Oracle Improvement Project

The area of the Grant Road and Oracle Road intersection has been selected as the first improvement project to be reconstructed as part of the Grant Road Improvement Plan. The project is currently in the design stage and construction is anticipated to begin in 2011. This project has been accelerated and will occur two years earlier than the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) has scheduled reconstruction. This project will serve as a template for future improvements on Grant Road and will showcase the unique design features and innovations for the entire roadway.

This project will also bring much needed benefits of improved safety, mobility and access for those who live, work, drive, walk and bike at the Grant-Oracle intersection. This public investment will deliver benefits for users of Grant and Oracle and will also create jobs and provide economic stimulus for the region.

First Indirect Left Turn at Grant-Oracle

The first indirect left turn on Grant Road will be featured at the Grant-Oracle intersection. The indirect left turn will create safer intersections along Grant Road by reducing vehicle and pedestrian conflict points and total crashes at intersections and increasing east-west mobility. The indirect left turn also creates a smaller intersection where less right-of-way is needed, possibly preserving existing businesses and reducing the distance pedestrians need to cross.

Public Artists Selected for Grant-Oracle

The public artists for the Grant-Oracle intersection were recently selected through a competitive process led by the Tucson Pima Arts Council (TPAC). Hank Saxe and Cynthia Patterson were the artists selected. Saxe-Patterson utilizes concrete, metals, glass and ceramic in their art designs. They work with a variety of public art forms for transportation corridors including walls, pavement, free-standing sculpture, fixtures, seating, lighting and other streetscape elements. The public art piece chosen for the Grant and Oracle intersection will follow the recommendations made in the Public Art Master Plan for the Grant Road Improvement Plan developed through community input received at neighborhood conversations, public workshops and open houses in 2009 and 2010. The artwork will be located in the public right-of-way. The public will have the opportunity to provide their input on the initial design concepts for the public art at Grant – Oracle.
